The Bible says "fight the good flight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses"...1Timothy 6:12
"I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2Timothy 4:7
What does it take for any athlete to compete? They must be in shape, they must be committed, they must stay focused on their goal.
We went to a college basketball game the other night and I couldn't help but draw the parallel of these players with my spiritual walk. They had to be in tip top physical shape to run up and down the court for an hour and a half of playing time. They had to be willing to put themselves out there even if it meant getting hurt. They had to know how to play the game and play it well. They had to be a team player in order for the team to be successful. They had to be teachable in order for the coach to do his job. And they needed encouragement from the fans and mascot.
I am taking stock of the shape I am in spiritually. Can I compete in the battle between good and evil with the same determination these players showed on the basketball court. What spiritual disciplines will make me stronger and better able to be used by God. You can't take a person off the street and expect them to play a professional game of basketball. Can we expected to be used by God if we are not in spiritual tip top shape willing to be taught and used by our Creator?
